Making it happen at UPM Biofuels: Continuous learning and innovation motivate Santtu Homanen

Sara Steensig

Editor, Tulus

Process Engineer Santtu Homanen enjoys being part of the innovative and technology-oriented biofuels business. His work never becomes dull when he can learn new skills and have fun with his colleagues.

What is your work all about?

I work as a process engineer in the UPM Biofuels Growth Programme. My main area of responsibility is the planning and designing of the biorefinery’s utilities and storage tank area. I also support my colleagues in the design of the hydrotreatment area. In addition to this, I support the biorefinery's permission processes.

What kind of professional background do you come from?

I have been at UPM for just over two years. Before that, I’ve worked with renewable fuels for a bit more than three years. I'm a process engineer by education, and currently I’m studying industrial management.

Please describe how it is to work in the biofuels business.

The industry and its technologies are constantly developing, as we search for different ways to clean raw materials and develop even more efficient and sustainable production processes. It's great to be part of an industry that is all about innovating and finding new methods.

What motivates and inspires you at work?

Continuous learning is what motivates me the most in my own work. I have the chance to learn something new every day. Working with several different stakeholders increases my knowledge of this industry as a whole.

How do you make sure to keep developing at work?

I am able to participate in internal and external courses and conferences that support my work, so I can keep my know-how up to date. We also have a fairly small project team, which makes it easy to get involved in interesting tasks. As an example, I got myself involved in planning the operational organisation of a possible new biorefinery.

How is the work atmosphere at UPM Biofuels?

The work atmosphere is positive and encouraging. It is easy to feel valued and motivated here. We have fun at work, and you’ll often hear a burst of roaring laughter in the office corridors and meetings!
